The chart below shows what would happen over a lifetime if the Dow Jones maintains that level of return over the child's lifetime.
Now I can hear all of the disbelievers saying yes but in 40 years time or 50 years time a million will not be what it is today. That's true, but on the other hand, it is still a lot of money, just as it was in the 60's. And given that this is almost a bit tongue in cheek, do we really care.
It is just a bet with a modest amount of money that history will repeat itself, and that over an extended period of time, the child will end up a millionaire, or if you believe the chart, a multi millionaire.
